August 2007 US employment figures showed 145,794,000 people with jobs, or 125,000 fewer than 6 months ago.  When that number goes into negative territory (125,000 FEWER), it is a warning of a slowdown in the economy.  Ohio’s unemployment rate last month increased to 5.6 percent (up from 5.2 percent one year ago).  States with the highest unemployment rates in September 2007 included Michigan (7.50 percent) and Mississippi (6.4 percent).
